Shame and deceit are interwoven into a vicious circle; shame leads to deceit, deceit produces an underlying sense of helplessness, which then produces more deceit and self-condemnation, which produces even more shame, but underneath there is a fragile and vulnerable part - the true self - ‘the rescued fragment’ waiting to be discovered, welcomed and recovered. This talk will explore the complex, self-conscious emotion of shame and its different manifestations in psychotherapy.
