As psychotherapists and counselors many of us will have attended a mindfulness course or perhaps have recommended one to our clients. Taking an historical journey through the different understandings of mindfulness found in Buddhism, this talk will intentionally muddy waters, ask difficult questions and hopefully leave us with a more nuanced understanding. Are mindfulness courses really teaching mindfulness and - beyond the hype - can what they teach have a real clinical value?
Nigel Wellings is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and author who works within a contemplative perspective. He has served as a Director of Training at the Centre for Transpersonal Psychology, is a founder member of The Forum for Contemplative Studies, and is now a teacher on the Bath and Bristol Mindfulness Courses. He has had several books published including ‘Nothing To Lose, Psychotherapy, Buddhism and Living Life’. His most recent book, is 'Why Can't I Meditate?
